Overview: In response to the 2022 global mpox outbreak, primarily impacting gay and bisexual
men who have sex with men (GBMSM), concerns remain about potential reemergence,
particularly in under-recognized populations. Recent data highlights low vaccination coverage
and mpox risk in both GBMSM and non-GBMSM communities, including those in congregate
settings. This study will monitor mpox reemergence across a diverse U.S. cohort, evaluating
individuals with mpox-compatible rashes (vesicular, pustular, ulcerated, or crusted) at 13
emergency departments nationwide. Patients aged three months and older will be followed over
time to investigate mpox transmission dynamics, assess vaccination coverage, and identify risk
factors associated with mpox to inform public health strategies.
